Tewet Tarn
Tewet Tarn, also known as Tewitt Tarn, is a very small lake just outside Keswick in the Lake District National Park.
The tarn is relatively easy to get to but about 10 minutes / 1 mile walk from the nearest parking location. After rainy weather the path can become muddy and the area around the tarn is very boggy.
I was fortunate to visit after a period of dry weather and the path was relatively good, but it is easy to get too close to the tarn where the ground stays very wet. Even though the area is not that popular for tourists when I arrived there were already 8 or 9 tripods being set up around the water’s edge.
On a still and sunny morning the views can be quite breathtaking. You can get fabulous shots of Blencathra, Lonscale Fell and Skiddaw which are perfectly reflected in the water. .
There is a fence and some reeds on the north side of the tarn which make a good lead-in line. This is also another perfect place to take two or three exposures, supported by a tripod, to stitch together into a panorama.
Getting There:
From Keswick town centre head out on the A591 towards Grasmere and Windermere. As you leave the town pass the Twa Dogs Inn and start to climb the hill, The road bends to the left and then to the right. Immediately at the right hand bend take the left turn signposted to Penrith. Take the next right hand turn signed for Castlerigg Stone Circle. Continue past the sone circle and at the bottom of the hill turn right at the T-junction. When you get to the next T-junction park at the side of the road. Walk up the road to the right and turn right at the first junction, signposted Shundraw, St John’s in the Vale Church. Carry on for about 300yds until you reach a gate on your right with a Public Footpath sign for “St John’s in the Vale Church via Tewet Tarn”.
Go through the gate and walk up the hill for about 10 minutes until you reach the tarn.
